Teagan Croft’s Interview
Teagan is frantically swinging her racket around the Marrickville District Lawn Tennis Club court before pausing to stretch her legs and adjust her sweatband.
She is the epitome of a young tennis star chasing her first major title—albeit a very elegant one who wears a white Prada minidress with a sparkling silver overlay and a racquet from Chanel.
She is supremely concentrated and unflappable in the sweltering Sydney heat. Why not, then? The Next Big Thing in the game is supposed to be her.
Croft, 18, who has been acting professionally for half her life, finds it easy to enter another person’s skin. Shooting the January cover of InStyle with tennis as the topic as the Australian Open arrives in town today, however, feels different.
In contrast to playing in a movie, she says, “the thing about doing a photo shoot is that you don’t have the words to define the character.”
Additionally, it might be challenging to include an additional degree of self-consciousness into your persona. The good news is that the self-consciousness vanishes after you’ve gotten into character. So I simply saw myself on the court and pretended to win.
It also helps that Croft enjoys retro fashion and is an enthusiastic tennis player and spectator. “My parents always played tennis with me growing up; my dad’s parents actually met playing tennis at university,” says Croft. “I adore this style.
The crimson Gucci x Adidas dress was my favorite [look], and it was to die for,” she emphasizes. “I was just in awe as soon as I put it on,” the wearer said.
Bright and bubbly, Croft speaks quickly while being attentive. In her younger years, casting directors would have loved her natural grace and effortless composure.
She explains, “I grew up around performing and acting and had two aunts who entered the industry when they were pretty young.” Croft’s mother is related to the well-known Australian performers Penny McNamee and Jessica McNamee. ”
At around the same time, I thought, ‘Well, I’d like to do that too. However, my parents did not want me to pursue a career as a child actress or to perform simply for the sake of it.
They thus provided me with a list of needs, including that a job be nearby, educational, and offer value to my life.
At the age of nine, Croft received her first professional role as Scout in the Sydney production of To Kill a Mockingbird by New Theatre.
She then landed a brief recurring part in Home and Away, and after appearing in the 2016 Australian science fiction film The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One, The New York Times dubbed her “a promising newcomer.”
Her major break came in 2018 when she was given the role of Raven in the DC Comics superhero series Titans, an HBO Max production.
Any preconceived ideas that Croft’s profession should take place near to home were disproved by the chance, and the young performer moved to Toronto, Canada, for filming, leaving behind her parents and two younger sisters.
She recently finished filming the fourth season of the wildly popular Netflix coming-of-age series, which is currently streaming. (For reference, Croft has accumulated roughly 900,000 Instagram followers and 6.4 million TikTok likes while claiming she is “not a big sharer”).
But for now, she’s excited about the release of her most recent endeavor and her first leading role in a movie: playing Jessica Watson in True Spirit. (in cinemas on January 26; and on Netflix from February 3).
The thrilling real story of the 16-year-old Australian who became the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop, and unsupported around the world is told in the film directed by Sarah Spillane and based on Watson’s 2010 memoir of the same name.
“When I was viewing it with a buddy, she asked, ‘Why are they letting her do this? ‘Her parents are absolutely nuts,'” recalls Croft, who was just six years old around the time when Watson’s expedition courted controversy and inspired supporters all over the world.
“[In the movie] you can tell that she’s a kid, but you can also see how capable she is. And I consider that to be really useful because I believe that, on a much lesser scale, all teens experience it.
That knowledge and contrast of, “I know I’m a child in your eyes, and I know I’m naive, but I really do think I can do this,” I really can, I swear it.
Before beginning filming, the actor met with Watson and they went sailing together, which was “really cool.” This allowed him to explore new acting ground: how to depict a genuine, live person. The choice is yours to make.
It’s important to decide whether you’re going to develop a character that mimics this person or one that is really influenced by them, and that’s what [director] Sarah and I discussed,
according to Croft.“Jessica was extremely beautiful when I first met her. She was quite sympathetic and said, “Don’t even worry about me.” Just bring it to life. I consider it to be the most crucial aspect, that the performance be genuine.
However, Croft faced a tremendous obstacle in his pursuit of authenticity. She chuckles, “Fun fact: I get seasick pretty easily.
And I waited until we were on the boat before telling production… On one occasion, the day was practically horrible on the sea. Everyone fell ill…
We only had two days to film on the open sea, and on one of those days, nearly every member of the crew was sick. The producers became ill. On this catamaran, we were all together, throwing up into bags.
The majority of the filming took place in Sydney Harbour and Broadwater on the Gold Coast, where the waves were gentler, and Croft decided to fully immerse herself in the marine lifestyle.
Going into diverse realms is her favorite part of what she does, she adds. “I took three weeks of sailing instruction and spent four hours a day on the water with my sailing coach Dani [Danielle Hutcheson], who is also my sailing double.
But since I would wax lyrical about sailing, I was a tremendous pain on set. She motions, pretending to tie a rope, “Oh, Teagan, just do some stuff over here.” “And I’d say, ‘No,’ Being correct was really essential to me since sailing is all about paying attention to detail.
As much as the movie is a tribute to the sea—a medley of vast blue panoramas accompanied by a pop song—it’s also a narrative of family, with Anna Paquin and Josh Lawson playing Watson’s parents.
The sailor experienced seven knockdowns throughout her 210-day voyage and traversed some of the world’s most treacherous sections (spoiler: she survived), but it was her loneliness from her family that frequently caused her to experience her darkest moments, and Croft had to draw on genuine and raw emotions to portray Watson.
Croft notes that she traveled from Toronto to Queensland to shoot the project just as the NSW-Queensland border closed amid a 2021 COVID wave.
“I was lucky as I had real-life experiences to draw from in those scenes,” she adds. It was quite tense. Like Jess, I couldn’t see my family since I was in the same situation.
It took me six or seven months to film Titans and then True Spirit, which is the same amount of time it took Jess to sail [around the world]. As a result, there was a strong personal connection.
Croft, who was 16 at the time of filming and was likewise leading an exceptional life for an adolescent girl, was Watson’s twin.
“Jess was pursuing her ambition, and I had the same sentiments about how difficult it may be to follow your dreams but that they are worthwhile. The knowledge that you took this decision provides you comfort, even when things are difficult and trying.
She emphasizes her similarities to Watson by stating that she always had the option to do this. Jess was seen working alone on her homework on the boat’s floor in one particular shot. Because we were the same age and she was doing the exact same schoolwork as I was, I thought, “Hey, I should actually [do mine].”
The study paid off. Croft completed Years 11 and 12 while filming True Spirit and Titans, both mostly through correspondence with Sydney Girls High School.
She continues, “I was in Toronto from February to September last year. To be quite honest, I just prepared for the examinations and then crammed when I got home to fill in the gaps.
She has now been admitted to university, where she intends to study the arts. (she arrives at our shoot with the acceptance letter fresh in her hand, having just returned home from a chilled Schoolies week on the Central Coast).
She brightens, “I think I’m going to major in literature,” adding sarcastically that she hopes to teach one day.
“[Last year] I realized that I’d been learning in such a compressed environment, and I realized how much I love discussing literature with intelligent people,” the student said. I’m eager to go [the university], learn, and socialize.
Croft views education as a means of broadening her thinking and acquiring life experiences, both of which are essential to her acting.
She declares, listing her ideal co-stars as Olivia Colman, Frances McDormand, and Jenna Ortega, “I’m just taking [my career] step by step and am loving what I do.” She quips, “[Ortega]’s my bestie who’s about my age.”
James Scully, who starred in Titans with Croft and You with Ortega, is our [common] link. So it’s great if she ever wants to reach out and do anything like get a coffee and relax. Play some Xbox or anything, then come inside, you know.”
At almost 19 years old, Croft is eager to work on wittier, gritty projects. I’d be thrilled to work on an Aaron Sorkin movie; they tend to be quite intelligent and conversational. I’d want to portray a cunning jerk. The truth is that I’m not very good at being cruel in real life.
If I tried to say something a little bit incisive when I was younger, I was constantly cut off. I’m never the bully; I’m always the victim. So playing a character where I succeed would be entertaining.
She is now succeeding, at least in spirit, on the tennis court. Back on the scene of our cover shot, Croft has commandeered the music (she selects “Gloria” by Laura Branigan, calling it a “proper fem powerhouse”) and emerges as the faux press pack surrounds her in a three-piece Max Mara Weekend suit.
She may be portraying the Next Big Thing, a rising star with immense potential, but off the court, in real life, she is a good fit for the name.
