Kamaljit Singh Jhooti (born 26 March 1981) is an English singer and songwriter. He is better known by the stage name ”Jay Sean”. He made his debut as a member of the Rishi Rich Project in the UK’s Asian Underground scene with “Dance with You“. Which reached No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart in 2003. He’d partnered with Guru Randhawa recently.

Jay Sean was born to immigrants from Punjabi Sikh, Kamaljit Singh Jhooti in Hounslow, London. His parents Sharan and Bindi Jhooti emigrated to Great Britain.
He was born in Southall, West London and exhibited early musical talent. At the age of 11, he formed a hip hop duo called ” Compulsive Disorder” with his cousin Pritpal Rupra.
His stage name was MC “Nicky J” at the time, with the “J” coming from his last name’s first letter “Jhooti.” He gradually came to be known by his friends by their nickname “Jay”.
Jay was a pupil at Latymer Upper School, the very private school that was attended by Hugh Grant, Heston Blumenthal and Lily Cole.
In 1997, he quit school. He finished his GCSEs as a “straight-A student” and then completed his A-levels in mathematics and chemistry with an A-level in biology and B-levels.
He subsequently studied at Queen Mary, University of London, in Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Until he dropped out in 2003 to study Medicine to pursue a singing career. He chose the stage name Jay for his music career “Jay” is his nickname, while “Sean” comes from “Shaan,” a nickname that his grandmother called at home, which means “Shining Star,” or “Pride” in Punjabi.

The lad had been very passionate about music from the outset. At age 11, Sean and his cousin Pritpal Rupra formed a hip-hop duo called “Compulsive Disorder.”
Jay’s first single”One Minute” fell into Rishi Rich’s hands in 2003. Contributing to the Rishi Rich Project consisting of Jay, Rishi Rich himself and Juggy D.
