STORY TIME: 137 days ago I supported my wife in conquering her first childbirth and I became a father. I’ve had over a decade of experience teaching people above the age of 4 but have had practically zero experience with anyone under that age. I had never changed a diaper, I had never helped an infant calm down, and I had never gave a baby a bottle. I was scared and inexperienced but ready to learn.
The first month was hard mostly because my wife was still recovering and it was hard to see her recovering while also being in charge of feeding our baby 12 times a day. Her role in parenting felt more important and I couldn’t help but feel a little useless but I slowly learned to help in any way I could.
The second month was a little better because my wife was mostly recovered and we started some bottle feeding so I could help more. But right when I started to feel good about getting in the swing of things, month 3 happened.
The third month my wife returned to her full time job and I became a “stay at home” dad. My sleep schedule changed, my wife was gone 40 hours a week, and therefore this was the most difficult chapter so far. I was exhausted but since I started having a lot more alone time with my son I learned a lot and started to feel more confident as a parent and feel closer to my son.
The fourth month was probably the easiest so far and that’s because he’s starting to sleep longer (sometimes), smile more (a lot more), and my wife had off work for the holidays so we both got more sleep.
According to a google search I just did, there are 1.5 billion dads in the world. I’m really fighting hard to earn a “#1 Dad Mug” on Father’s Day, but realistically with the number of dads that exist, I’ll be happy with placing in the top 275,000.[Collected from Instagram]
