Alvina August is NOT “African American”. Why not? Because she was not born in America, nor were her parents born in America. The term “African American” indicates a person’s genetic ancestry – African – & the country in which they were born – America. Ms. August was born in Zimbabwe & raised in Canada. Presumably she has become a naturalized Canadian citizen, which would make her a Zimbabwean-Canadian. In circumstances like this where there are multiple races (DNA/genetics), ethnicities (culture) & nationalities (a person’s birthplace or citizenship), it might be best to describe Ms. August as “Black Canadian”. Better yet, it would be respectful to ask Ms. August HERSELF how she identifies herself.
